Medicines Matter Pharmacy Campaign

Medicines Matter Pharmacy Campaign

July 11, 2018

Community Pharmacies across Staffordshire and Stoke on Trent are being asked to take part in this vitally important campaign.

The campaign is being supported by the LPCs, NHS England (Shrops & Staffordshire) plus all of the local CCGs as well as patient groups and has been developed as part of the STP waste campaign.

It is recognised that the issues around waste medicines is a whole system problem and everyone – public, GPs and Community Pharmacy Teams are being asked to step up and take part.

THIS IS EVERYONE’S PROBLEM – there is not enough money in the NHS and we have to act now.  If we do not take part and show that community pharmacy can be part of the solution we will be seen as part of the problem and more drastic measures may be taken to curb medication ordering.

The campaign pack will be landing with community pharmacies across South Staffordshire over the coming month and we ask you to display the poster, sign up to the pledge and put words into action and remember to ask patients which items they need – EVERY time they ask you to order a prescription.

  • Saying “do you want everything?” is not acceptable – ask them to name the items, this is a double win as patients get to know the names of their tablets and helps them take responsibility for their medication as well as ensuring that only items that are needed are ordered.
  • Community Pharmacy Teams should not be ordering monthly items automatically without having a conversation with the patient about which particular items they need.
  • Please encourage patients to check their prescription is correct when they collect it and give you unwanted items back before they leave the pharmacy – that way they can be returned to stock and the prescription marked “not dispensed”.

This is the poster that has been produced and is being shared with all GP practices and pharmacies.  There will be information in the press and on local radio about the campaign as well as on social media – community pharmacy NEEDS to be on board with this campaign.

The CCGs have put information for the public on their website – you can see a copy of it on this website here.  The LPC will also be adding details onto our patient facing website.
