Listening Skills & Emotional Support Training – July 2021

Listening Skills & Emotional Support Training – July 2021

June 24, 2021

The Background

Throughout the COVID-19 Pandemic, Community pharmacists and their teams have provided a consistent level of service to patients and public, maintaining essential access to prescriptions, healthcare advice and support. Many LPCs are seeing  increasing numbers of reports of high levels of stress amongst pharmacy team members, with the following issues being identified as contributory factors:

  • absence as a direct and indirect result of COVID infection in staff and family members
  • increased workload – both directly and as a result of changes to working practices in GP surgeries etc
  • changes to pharmacy layout and procedures (including the  wearing of PPE)
  • concerns over finance – both business and personal

South Staffordshire LPC want to support the health and wellbeing of their teams. As many pharmacy teams work very much in isolation from colleagues both within and outside of their organisation, the potential for significant impact on team members’ mental wellbeing is high. The committee believes that there is an opportunity to build on the good practice found operating in some organisations.  E.g.  team members receiving specific training in mental health awareness, up to the level of Mental Health First Aider.

The issue was raised at our March Local Professional Network (LPN) meeting, with the three Staffordshire and Shropshire LPCs agreeing to submit a proposal to provide training to pharmacy contractors and their teams on Mental Health awareness.

Whilst other resources are available to support better mental health and wellbeing (eg Pharmacist Support, or Looking After You Too which is available to all primary care staff) LPCs felt that specific support would not just benefit individuals concerned but the whole pharmacy team.

The Outcomes We Want To Achieve

The intended outcomes of the proposal are:

  • All community pharmacy contractors can have access to training which can support early identification of mental health and wellbeing issues
  • Better understanding  of mental health, wellbeing and emotional issues in self and others, and confidence in talking to colleagues about these
  • Better knowledge and understanding of when, how and where to signpost colleagues for more support
  • Identification and support helps to prevent crises and build confidence and resilience in pharmacy team members
  • Prevention of crises will help to ensure ongoing effective provision of community pharmacy services
  • Training may also help pharmacy team members in managing patients presenting in the pharmacy with mental health and wellbeing concerns

The Local Professional Network has since approved relevant funding to support this project, and we have identified a course from The Samaritans which we consider provides the right level of training for this project – “Listening skills and emotional health” – and based on the course outline below:
